Types of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork
Customized Therapeutic Massage
Massage Therapy is the systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body based on anatomy and physiology. Muscle tension, whether from normal activity, physical pain, or stress, contributes to muscular pain and fatigue as well as physical and emotional distress.
Therapeutic Massage is relaxing and rejuvenating, promoting optimal health and well-being while easing muscular pain and soreness, and assisting injury rehabilitation. Techniques range from the lighter, broader strokes of Swedish Massage to the deeper, more specific work of Deep Tissue and Sports Massage.
Customized Therapeutic Massage focuses on achieving maximum physical results by customizing the session to your individual needs. It consists of deep-tissue techniques, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, cross fiber friction, positional release, stretching, and range of motion techniques. This massage is for the person who has stress, knots, tension, hyper contracted muscles, decreased range of motion, tenderness, or pain. It promotes relaxation, improves circulation and leaves you with a sense of well-being.
Athletic Massage
Athletic Massage helps the body to recover from the stresses of strenuous exercise. Sports Massage may also focus on specific muscles used in a sport and may include stretches and techniques to optimize performance of these muscles. Specific "trouble spots" from past injuries or developing problems are addressed to help keep these areas in good condition. Massage can also help an athlete avoid overtraining by promoting relaxation and speeding up recovery time. Other benefits of Sports Massage include improving endurance and performance, increasing flexibility and mobility, enhancing concentration and focus, and restoring energy and overall wellness.
Traditional Thai Massage (Nuad Bo Rarn)
Traditional Thai Massage is a type of bodywork native to Thailand that involves stretching and deep massage. Thai Massage is also called Thai Yoga Massage, because the therapist uses her hands, knees, legs and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Many people say Thai Massage is like doing yoga without any work. Thai Massage is more energizing and rigorous than Western/Swedish forms of massage and incorporates stretches and deep release of joints, muscles, and energy blocks through Shiatsu style compressions. Thai Massage sessions are done on a comfortable padded mat on the floor with the receiver wearing loose, comfortable clothing. People describe Thai Massage as both relaxing and energizing. ***Traditional Thai Massage on the mat is no longer offered; however Thai for the table and integrated Thai with deep tissue are available options.
Craniosacral Therapy
The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and the spinal cord. Restrictions or imbalances in the craniosacral system can potentially cause any number of sensory, motor, or neurological imbalances. A CST session is so gentle that it is suitable for babies, children, and the elderly, as well as adults and people in fragile or acutely painful conditions.
Some of the many conditions successfully worked with are:
migraines and headaches
chronic neck and back pain
TMJ
scoliosis
spinal cord injuries
post traumatic stress
motor coordination impairments
ear problems
learning disabilities
ADD/ADHD
Autism
infantile disorders
and many other conditions
Shiatsu (Acupressure)
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese form of bodywork. The word Shiatsu means "finger pressure", and Shiatsu is sometimes described as a finger pressure massage. Like acupuncture, Shiatsu is based on the holistic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where illness is thought to result from imbalances in the natural flow of energy, or qi (pronounced "chee") through the body. Shiatsu therapists use fingers, thumbs, palms, and feet to apply continuous rhythmic pressure to energetic pathways, called meridians to improve the flow of qi. A scientific explanation is that Shiatsu calms an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which improves circulation, relieves stiff muscles, and alleviates stress. Certain pressure points may feel tender, which some people describe as "good pain."
Jin Shin Do Acupressure
Based on traditional Chinese acupuncture theory, Japanese finger pressure (shiatsu), and Western body-centered psychotherapy, acupressure relieves tension while rebalancing energy pathways. Using gentle contact at specific points on the body, acupressure benefits all systems and organs of the body.
Thai Foot Reflexology
Thai Foot Reflexology is a massage of the feet, hands and legs that involves stretching and massage to clear energy lines. It can also be performed with the use of a stick to stimulate the reflex points on the feet that correspond to the internal organs of the body.
A treatment in Thai Foot Massage will usually last between 30 minutes to one hour. Traditional Thai Massage and Thai Foot Massage can be used in conjunction with one another. However, Thai Foot Massage is starting to become more popular by having its parts incorporated into traditional western foot massage. Thai Foot Massage is meant to stimulate the internal organs, and categorized as a holistic treatment.
Kinesiotaping
Also called KT tape for short, this is an elastic adhesive tape that is waterproof and wearable for days at a time, and when applied to an injured area, helps alter how your body interprets pain. The tape has a microscopic lifting effect on the skin which allows fluid and inflammation to be removed quickly. When applied to an injured area, it allows your body to coordinate movements as if it weren't injured, allowing for proper healing. KT tape facilitates the body's natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints, and has positive physiological effects on the skin, lymphatic and circulatory systems, fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints. RockTape is a high-end brand of KT tape that is used to treat clients in sessions when applicable and is also available for retail sale.
Gua Sha
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment in which the skin is scraped with a flat edged tool (also called 'coining, spooning, or scraping') to release unhealthy elements from an injured area, break up adhesions, and stimulate blood flow and healing. It gives relief from pain and frees up a greater range of movement in joints and ligaments. This treatment is often followed by an application of KT tape.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping Therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin using glass, plastic, or silicone cups. Rather than applying pressure to muscles, the suction uses pressure to pull skin, tissue, and muscles upward. This treatment facilitates the restoration of healthy, free circulation in the affected area. Cups may be moved around using massage techniques or left in place for several minutes. Cupping Therapy causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue, or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was treated. Skin discoloration can last anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks but is rarely painful. Cupping Therapy is used to treat pain, deep scar tissue in muscles and fascia, muscle knots, and swelling.
Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy Massage is usually recommended after the first trimester and focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be. Many common conditions such as low back pain, swelling of hands and feet, headaches, insomnia, leg cramps and sciatic pain can be relieved through regular massages throughout the second and third trimesters. Overall goals of pregnancy massage include reducing stress, promoting relaxation and preparing the muscles used during childbirth.
Reiki
Reiki is one of the more widely known forms of energy healing. A simple laying-on-of-hands, Reiki promotes deep relaxation while stimulating the body's natural healing systems, promoting wellness, energy balancing, and stress reduction.
